Visionary theatre at the Roundhouse

The portfolio of director, playwright and actor Robert Lepage is more than awe inspiring... To people who like visionary theatre, it is breathtaking. Robert Lepage created and Totem for Cirque du Soleil, the Wagner Ring Cycle at the New York Metropolitan Opera and The Image Mill, a spectacular architectural illumination and urban projection. Now he has created a series of 4 360° theatre productions that go by the name Playing Cards. The first installment is Spades and you can experience it at the London Roundhouse from 7 February until 2 March. Spades tells a series of intertwined stories set in the two desert cities of Las Vegas and Baghdad at the start of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003: the tale of two coalition soldiers who have a gay love affair; a French recovering alcoholic and her gambling-addicted British boyfriend; and the story of a palliative nurse and her physicist husband, who are married by Elvis and get mixed up with a mysterious cowboy called Dick. Judging from the images and the reviews already available from the performances in Madrid, Toronto and Essen, it is a must see experience. All info about the London shows is on the Roundhouse website. Kate Connolly went to see the artist in Essen and wrote this great article that really says it all.
